First fishing trip for the grandchildren.

This has been a vacation of firsts. Firsts for me. Firsts for my kids. And many firsts for grandchildren. Sometimes you have to break out to break in.

They have experienced canoeing, kayaking, s’mores and as of yesterday, fishing.

A couple of great folks gave fishing poles and things to let my grandchildren learn to fish. Yesterday my son, “hooked” them up. He made sure the poles worked and that they had bait. He took them fishing. They did not catch anything. But last night they went out on the dock. And things went crazy.

They began pulling in crappies, sunfish and perch. How fun to hear their excited voices with each catch. How funny to watch them thread worms, remove hooks and release fish.

One of them even participated in “accidental swimming”. You know. That place where you are between land and dock and there is not enough leg to reach both!

There is something about a child being exposed to the ways of the wilderness. Its beauty, its depth, its provision.

To hear my grandchildren laughing. Getting nervous. Their cries of “what now?” will always ring in my head.

This is a vacation of firsts.
